Bridon Ropes vs Clapton CFC preview: Men’s First Team back in action after week off

Bridon Ropes vs Clapton Community FC takes place on Saturday, October 12 2024 with a 3pm kick off at Meridian Sports & Social Club, Charlton Park Lane, SE7 8QS

After 4 games in a hectic 10 days, this is the first game in 11 days for the Clapton CFC Men’s First Team. Fortunately there’s not due to be another blank weekend until the New Year (weather permitting). It’s also the first of five away games on the bounce.

Saturday sees a return to league action after playing in three cup competitions in those 10 days. We progressed in the most important one, the FA Vase, but are out of the Essex Senior Cup and the SCEFL Challenge Cup. It was Bridon Ropes who knocked us out of the latter so this is a quick chance for revenge.

The opposition

Bridon Ropes FC was formed as a factory team in 1935 by workers at the British Ropes Works in Charlton. It was originally called British Ropes FC, before becoming Bridon Sports in 1990 and Bridon Ropes in 1992. The name Bridon originates from ‘British’ and ‘Doncaster’, where the company is headquartered. After spells in the London Spartan, Spartan South Midlands, London Intermediate and Kent County leagues, they’ve been in this division for over a decade. There’s been some near misses from promotion since (including 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th places) while last season new manager Lee Roots led them to 10th place safety.

Form guide

It’s been a mixed season for Bridon Ropes so far but a draw at promotion challengers Canterbury City in their last game – following on from that win against us – suggests they’re hitting their stride.
