The final day of the season down left everything to play for in the Super5 League Beginners B Division at Mabley Green. After just over a year together, four mini seasons and massive growth, Clapton Cageys FC 5-a-side team won our last match and claimed runner-up position, celebrating with homemade brownies, a flare and huge enthusiasm to chase gold next season.
The final game saw us face BIG FC and in the first few minutes, our defensive wonder-wall Carrie stepped up to take advantage of a slight keeper error and hammer a penalty home. With our Golden Glove award-winning goalie Jenn holding it down, many of BIG FC’s attempts were thwarted by safe hands. One goal managed to sneak past to bring things level, but even Jenn agreed it deserved to hit the back of the net.
However, the Cageys battled on with high energy and a sneaky chip from Lucy went over the defender and past the keeper to put us back in the lead. Our other players on the night – Maddy, Sarah, Beth and Alice – put in absolute shifts to get us to the final whistle, securing a 2:1 win against a truly excellent team.
Unfortunately, even though tied on points, BIG’s superior goal difference allowed them to take the title.
This has been an incredible season for the Cageys, including those who missed out playing in the final due to injury, illness and adventure – big love to Madeleine, Holly, Kaye – but were there fighting in every other game. As always, big thanks to Julie, Ellie and the extended CCFC fans/family/teams for forever supporting our little team.
