Clapton CFC vs Welling United preview: Midweek home friendly for Women’s First Team

Clapton Community FC vs Welling United takes place on Wednesday, August 7 2024 with a 7.45pm kick off at the Old Spotted Dog Ground, Forest Gate, East London.

Clapton CFC Women’s First Team are back in action for their sixth and penultimate friendly of a busy pre-season schedule.

We welcome Welling United, who play at the same level as us, to the Old Spotted Dog Ground for a Wednesday night game under the floodlights.

After this, there’s one final friendly, against last season’s promoted side Sport London E Benfica, before the 2024/25 season finally gets underway at home to Actonians Reserves.

Opposition

Welling United ply their trade in the Southern Division of the London & South East Regional Women’s League Div One – we’re in the Northern Division. They finished fourth in the league last season – same as we did. So it should be a close match. You’ll no doubt be familiar with their successful semi-pro men’s team, which flits between the National League and National League South.

Form guide

Welling United have had a mixed pre-season so far, with a 4-3 win over Brentwood Town sandwiched between a 2-0 defeat at Bromley and 5-2 to Chelmsford City. CCFC meanwhile have lost 2-0 to Independiente de Vallecas, 2-1 to Barking and 5-3 to Leyton Orient, but beaten two higher division teams in Sutton United (5-2) and Enfield Town (3-1).

Previous meetings

The teams met for the first time last season in a mad league cup game away in Eltham. Clapton CFC eventually won 5-3 through goals from Emily Link 2, Teju Callisto, Marta Casanovas and Lucy Spours.

Food and drink

The Clubhouse bar will be open from 6.45pm until after the full-time whistle. We have a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks on sale. We have two beers on tap from Pretty Decent Brewery, generally a lager and Old Scaffold Daze, our own IPA. We also have reusable cups now.

Please help the club by purchasing drinks from the bar. The premises are licensed so we ask you not to bring your own alcohol into the OSD. The profits from the bar are invested in maintaining the grounds.

We also have hot drinks (coffee, tea, hot chocolate, Bovril) and water and squash at the bar, please help yourself. There is no charge but feel free to put some change in the donation box.

We have crisps, nuts, and Hackney Gelato on sale in the clubhouse.
