It’s the East London derby this Sunday for the women’s first team as we take on our trailblazing friends Hackney Women’s FC.
It’s our first ever competitive meeting, although the two teams have played friendlies before, drawing once 1-1 at the Stray Dog and HWFC winning 2-0 on Hackney Marshes.
While Hackney Women’s FC are bottom of the table at the moment, they can move up significantly if they win their games in hand.
They’ve had some good results, including a win and draw against Richmond Park in the league, and cup wins against Regents Park Rangers, Bexhill United, Fakenham Town, Cray Valley (PM).
Our former hotshot striker Fae Fulconis is now playing up front for Hackney Women so will definitely be one to watch.
In a sign of how tangled East London football club names are, Hackney WFC play in Walthamstow, while Clapton CFC play in Forest Gate in Newham. Confused?
About Hackney WFC
Hackney Women’s Football Club was founded in 1986 and was the first totally women-run team and the first out lesbian team in the UK.
While other clubs have only just recently stopped calling themselves Ladies, Hackney Women’s FC avoided the phrase from the start.
They have spent over 10 seasons training outside Hackney due to the lack of suitable pitches in the borough, particularly for women’s teams.
