The cup winning Clapton CFC men’s first team wrapped up the season with a high-scoring, entertaining win against bottom side Wilberforce Wanderers.
With the trophy on display and the sun shining, the Tons raced into a 4-0 lead within 36 minutes, including a hat-trick for Fred Taylor to take his season tally to 14.
But Wilberforce have been much better than their league position suggests in both games this season and deserved to reduce the deficit to 4-2.
Jake Stevens twice blocks attempted forward passes from Wilberforce and sends a low through ball to Taylor. His first shot is saved, but he is quickest to the rebound and pokes the ball into the corner.
2-0 – 20 mins
It’s a second for Taylor. Again the all is intercepted, and Samba Badjana and Taylor one-two their way forward. One on one with the keeper, Taylor slots to the keeper’s right.
3-0 – 31 mins
Badjana Is quickest to a loose ball and lifts the ball over the on-rushing keeper.
4-0 – 36 mins
Taylor grabs his hat trick. A low corner from the right, and he is free in the six-yard box to blast home.
4-1 – 40 mins
Wilberforce pull a goal back. The ball is given away on the edge of the area, and the visitor’s Tiago Pereira hits a clean shot into the bottom left corner.
4-2 – 76 mins
Wilberforce forward Pereira is played through one on one. Jack Francis comes out to close down, but he has little chance as the ball is slotted past him.
There was no sign Wilberforce could come back to grab a draw, but CCFC player-manager Geoff Ocran was disappointed that the team took their foot off the pedal.
The win means we seal third place in the table, behind promoted NW London and runners-up Brentham.
